Each year, HKCBA Calgary is proud to honor the achievements of students who express interests in establishing closer ties to Asia.  These are the recipients of our 2010 HKCBA Scholarships which were awarded during our Year of the Tiger banquet on February 26, 2010.

Bow Valley College - Emerson Musarurwa

Emerson was born and raised in Harare, Zimbabwe. Since graduating high school, he attended university in England and spent many years working for financial and development institutions. The work took him as far away as China and Hong Kong, among other international destinations. He finally set up home in Canada in 2006.

Through Bow Valley College, a golden opportunity presented itself to pursue a full-time CMA accelerated program within the context of the college’s ESL program courses.  His daily interaction with the diverse group of internationally educated students has broadened his knowledge of the dynamics of today’s borderless marketplace.   

 

Mount Royal University - Maeghan Smulders

Maeghan is a 4th year business student at Mount Royal University. She chose to study abroad in Hong Kong with the understanding that China and Hong Kong are one of the fastest growing economies in the world. 

Maeghan felt it was necessary to experience and understand a culture that was so different from her own because, as global market continue to grow she wanted to be able to understand and relate to other international business leaders outside of Canada, as well as advance herself as an asset to any company Maeghan chooses to work for in the future. 

 

SAIT Polytechnic - Guobiao Ma

Four years ago Guobiao and his family immigrated from China to Canada to start a new life. Although Guobiao recognized the differences between the two countries prior to arriving, he was in cultural shock when he arrived “I could hardly communicate with people here at the beginning. I found that everything was totally different from China,” says Guobiao.

As a financial and accounting consultant in China, Guobia wanted to continue his career but found that he needed to advance his skills for the Canadian industry. With the support of his wife and daughter, Guobia enrolled in the Business Administration program at SAIT and plans to pursue his career in consulting

 

University of Calgary - Alexandra Nuth

Alexandra is in her final year at the University of Calgary pursuing a Bachelor of Commerce degree with a minor in East Asian studies. She has studied twice at Shantou University, China in May 2008 and May 2009 as a participant in the UofC "Shantou-Calgary Global Leadership and Innovation" Groups Study Program. This program involves students from the University of Calgary and Shantou University in classroom and includes group work promoting intercultural communication and problem solving. Last summer she worked in Guangzhou assisting foreign companies tailor their marketing strategies for the Chinese market and plans to return to China to develop her career in Asia.
