2008 Scholarship Winners On February 22, 2008, HKCBA welcomed the Year of the Rat with a 10 course Chinese banquet at the Regency Palace Restaurant. One of our most successful evenings with over 400 attendees, including The Honourable Norman L. Kwong, Lieutenant Governor of Alberta and his wife, The Honourable Mary Kwong. Another first for HKCBA this year was the selection of a student emcee from Mount Royal College's Broadcasting department- Ms. Shayna Nackoney. Shayna was partnered with Ms. Judy Gabriel from CityTV Calgary. Both ladies were excellent hostesses for the evening's festivities. Each year, HKCBA presents 4 scholarships to post secondary students at: Bow Valley College, Mount Royal College, SAIT Polytechnic and The University of Calgary. Here are the bios for this year's deserving winners: BOW VALLEY COLLEGE - MS. VIANNY RIVERA
MOUNT ROYAL COLLEGE - MR. DAVID SCHRYVERS David Schryvers was born and raised in Calgary . Since graduating High School in 2000, he has spent a large portion of his time in Asia: teaching English in Mainland China , Taiwan and South Korea and traveling extensive throughout China . The cultures and language of East Asia had become of great interest to David so he chose to pursue a major in East Asian Studies and began his academic program at Mount Royal College . Through Mount Royal College the opportunity presented itself to study in Hong Kong at Lingnan University for the FAll 2007 semester. David indicates that this experience helped him see Hong Kong in a different light then the rest of China . He says "My interactions with the local, Mainland and other foreign student contributed to my education more than my academic work ever could. My experience were rich and I would never hesitate to recommend this exchange to anyone." David grew both personally and academically from the exchange, successfully completing the 4 courses taken at Lingnan and maintaining a 3.25 GPA. SAIT POLYTECHNIC - MS. CHANTELLE SCRUGGS Chantelle is currently in her 4th and final semester of the Business Administration - Marketing diploma at SAIT Polytechnic. Last semester she had the privilege of taking an International Marketing course, which broadened her understanding of the diverse world in which we live. She found it very interesting to learn about the similarities and differences of conducting business internationally. She says it is so important for students to gain at least a general understanding in this area of study, especially in a time when most businesses are expanding into the international marketplace. She has maintained a 4.0 GPA during her time at SAIT. THE UNIVERSITY OF CALGARY The University of Calgary selects their student winner later in the calendar year. HKCBA is proud to recognize the achievements of each of the student winners and applaud their contributions to the community.
